Behavioural Optometry

Having studied with a number of Behavioural optometrists from overseas and having gained the required level of further education to be included in the British Association of Behavioural Optometrists referral list, John P. Glover has a keen interest in seeing patients with problems that can be addressed with vision therapy.

The bulk of patients seen are children who have specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia etc.

Current research shows that a high proportion of these people have vision problems. Frequently they are the sort of problems that have not been uncovered by routine Optometric or Orthoptic screening.

We do not normally do full assessments on children below the age of seven as it is not felt that they have yet gained enough maturity of vision to cooperate with all the tests. Indeed some of the tests are not designed for children below this age, but we are always happy to see a child of any age for a routine screening or even for a full assessment if there is a specific problem.

Assessments normally take an hour and a questionnaire is forwarded for completion in advance. Parents are also requested to bring any flash photographs they may have which show a red eye reflex, a sample of their writing and a sample of reading of their current level.

Most of the testing is fun and not particularly difficult for a child to do. Both parents are encouraged to attend and sit in on the examination, but it is best if other children are left at home as they are distracting for the subject.

The assessment will cover all aspects of vision including the following.

After the assessment a discussion of the problems will take place and a report will be prepared in due course, where appropriate spectacles and/or vision training may be recommended.
